Abstract

11,522. Nield, D. May 17. Movable - abutment type; working-fluid supply.-In a rotary internal-combustion engine, the combustion chambers b, having suitablyoperated inlet valves m and sparking-plugs n, are enclosed at each end by sliding or hinged abutments c. Springs c<3>, Fig. 4, tend to keep the abutments c in contact with a piston d which has two heads d<1> acting as cams to lift the abutments. The first head d<1> clears the first abutment c and compresses the charge in the chamber b, where it is ignited, the second abutment c being then maintained in its raised position by a cam l on the piston shaft, Fig. 3, actuating through a lever k a spring-pressed plunger k<1> which engages for the proper period a quadrant c' on the abutment spindle c<1>, Fig. 4. Exhaust ports e are provided, the second head d' acting as a scavenging-piston while the second abutment c is held in its raised position. Air-inlet valves p may be provided to prevent the formation of a vacuum behind the scavenging-piston. The scavenging- piston may serve also to draw in the charge, and if necessary may operate as a working- piston in another position.
