Abstract

9953. Tate, T., and Molloy, M. April 28. Pneumatically - operated fastenings. - In apparatus for locking and unlocking the doors of railway - carriages &c., two power cylinders which are controlled from the guard's van are arranged beneath the vehicle, one cylinder for locking and the other for unlocking the doors of the carriage; while each side set of doors is adapted to be independently operated by hand. The two cylinders 6, 7, Fig. 4, have their piston-rods 9, 12 connected to the common shaft 11 by cranks disposed respectively below and above the shaft. When the shaft is rocked, segments 14, Fig. 2, on each side of the carriage are also rocked and by means of teeth, longitudinally move the rods 4, arranged alongside the carriage. A pin 39, co-operating with the rod 4, engages a slot in the bolt 2, pivoted at 3 to the side of the carriage. Within the bolt 2 is mounted a spring-pressed latch 25 which permits of slamming of any door after the others have been locked. To hold the bolt in the locking or unlocking position without maintaining the steam pressure, the bolt is provided with an arm 20, a pin 21 on which is attached to a spring 22 fixed to the pin 23 on the carriage in such a position that the bolt in the locking and unlocking positions is on one or other side of the dead centre. A cock in the guard's van controls the admission of steam from pipe 16 to the cylinder 7 to lock the doors or from pipe 15 to the cylinder 6 to unlock the doors. For operating the doors independently by hand, a lever 29, Fig. 7, is arranged on each side of the carriage and is designed first to unclutch the rocking segment 14 from the cross-shaft 11. To this end, the lever 29 is provided with a grip-handle 35 whose inward movement, by means of the rod 37 and the bellcrank 38, pushes in the rod 31 and thus forces the connected clutch-member 32, keyed to the shaft 11, against the spring 33. Instead of employing a grip-handle 35, the lever 29 itself may be fitted at its base with a double inclined cam 30, Fig. 5, in such a way that the first movement of the hand-lever 29 brings the cam into operation and forces in the clutch rod 31, again unclutching the shaft 11 and the rocking segment 14. To prevent breaking of the bolts when the doors of one side of the carriage have already been locked by operation of the handlever and it is then attempted to lock the remaining doors from the cylinders, the bolts 2 are resiliently connected, Figs. 2 and 4, to the longitudinal rods 4 by mounting each pin 39 on a block 40 which is held between springs 41, 42 and is guided by rods 45, 46 passing through stops 43, 44 on the bar 4. To prevent accumulation of condensed steam, a drain-cock on each cylinder is arranged to be opened by the movement of the piston-rod by means of rods 49, 51, 53 or 50, 52, 54 respectively.
