Abstract

8683. McKenna, T., [Spruson, W, J.]. April 12. Force-feed lubricators. -In a force-feed system of lubrication for the cylinders &c. of steam, oil, or gas engines, uniformitv of lubrication under different loads is secured by placing a spring-loaded balanced check valve in each delivery pipe close to the point of application of the lubricant. A.pump forces oil from a reservoir to a pipe provided with an adjustable relief valve, and communicating with a number of sight feeds, each fitted with a check valve and a stop-cock. The pipes leading from the sight-feeds to the cylinders &c. are fitted with valves having two heads Q, R on which the steam acts equally. A loading- spring is adjusted by turning a screwed cap V until the pressure exceeds slightly the maximum steam pressure. The oil enters the valve casing by a pipe F, and when its pressure exceeds that of the spring, the valve R opens to admit a small quantity; the pressure in the pipe F being then relieved, the valve closes again until the pressure of the oil is restored.
