Embossing; impression surfaces. - Agglomerated fibrous materials in the form of relatively thick sheets or layers are moulded in relief to form plaques, mouldings, &c. by means of a pressing die or platen a, which bears upon the material j through an elastic cushion of liquid contained in a closed space e bounded by a relatively thick rubber diaphragm d. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the layer of liquid is replaced by a thick rubber cushion n. A sheet of felt or fabric k may be placed over the material for the escape of air and water. The diaphragm d, Fig. 1, is clamped between rings b, c, and the fabric k is held in place by a ring l.
