Abstract

1597. Albert, E. Jan. 26. Electrotype. - Matrices for electrotyping are formed by pressing the lead or other material on the forme or block &c. to be copied, upon parts of the area of the matrix and forme successively, so that less pressure is required. Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a press having a platen a onethird the area of the matrix and forme c, d, which latter are supported on the bed e. The platen or the forme are moved so that the three parts 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 are pressed successively. The platen may consist of several strips or squares &c., the total area of which is a fraction of that of the forme, the platen and forme being moved relatively as required to press the matrix by several successive pressing operations. In order to prevent the lead &c. forming the matrix from yielding unduly near the parts being pressed, the platen a, Fig. 8, is formed with parts f<1>, f<2>, f<3>, &c. adjacent to the main pressing-surfaces a<1>. A soft and elastic layer, such as a number of sheets of paper, may be placed between the platen and the matrix during the pressing.
