Electrotype.-Matrices are made from half-tones by the use of thin sheets of metal foil to receive the impression, and from these electrotypes are prepared in the usual manner. The sheet of metal 4, with soft material such as paper above it, is first laid on the half-tone block 1, and on applying pressure between the plates of an hydraulic or other suitable press, the foil receives an impression of the half-tone. The paper is then removed and a plate of plastic material or a plate with a prepared face of wax 6 is placed as shown, and pressure is again applied. The foil 4 is pressed into the wax to which it firmly adheres, and can thus be separated from the half-tone block 1. From the impression thus obtained on the foil embedded in the wax, an electrotype can be prepared. Means are also described for making electrotypes of a combined forme of half-tone and type. The page forme is made with a space 8, Fig. 8, to receive the half-tone block 1 on which is placed a sheet of metal foil 4. This is first given an impression of the half-tone as before. The waxed plate 6 is then placed over the whole forme, and pressure again applied. A composite matrix of the type in wax and the half-tone in metal foil adhering to the wax is thus obtained, from which the electrotype may be prepared. Or the matrices of the type and half-tone may be made separately and afterwards combined.
