5926. Newton, F., and Newton Bros. March 10. Exciting; rotary transformers; windings.- A machine adapted to serve as an auto-transformer, balancer, booster, or three-wire generator is provided with an armature winding having a span equal to 1/3 n of the periphery where n is the number of pairs of main poles and with 3 n brushes symmetrically spaced about the commutator. The distance between the main poles S, N is also equal to 1/3n of the periphery. An auxiliary pole S' may be provided for each pair of main poles. Series windings are arranged on the auxiliary poles, and shunt or shunt and opposing or assisting series windings on the main poles. Any desired characteristic may be obtained by a suitable choice of the material of the poles and by suitably proportioning the shunt and series windings.
