Abstract

2841. McGregor, W. A. Feb. 4. Door holders; stays.- In a device for holding ships' cabin or other doors and windows in a closed or partly-open position, of the kind in which a bolt on the door engages a slotted stay attached to the door frame, and in which complete separation of the bolt from the stay is only possible when the door is closed, means are provided for holding the bolt in various longitudinal positions corresponding respectively to (1) complete separation from the stay, (2) a closed and locked position of the door, (3) free movement along the stay, and (4) a locking position for holding the door in a partly-open position. The stay 1, Fig. 3, is provided with a slot 1, a number of recesses 4, and a larger inner recess 5, and may be pivoted to the door frame as shown, springs 20 controlling its movement ; or it may be curved and fixed to the door frame as in Fig. 4. The bolt may be spring- controlled and is operated by a button 12 adapted to engage in either of a series of recesses 9, 10, 11, Fig. 4, or 9, 9, 10, 11, Fig. 6, in the bolt casing. in the form shown in Figs. 6 and 6, the recesses correspond to respective positions of the bolt in which (1) the bolt is separated from the stay 1, (2) the head 14 engages the large recess 5 to lock the door in the closed position, (3) the neck 15 is free to slide along the slot 1, and (4) the conical part 16 can engage with either of the recesses 4 to hold the door partly open. In the form of bolt shown in Fig. 4, the recesses 9 and 10 correspond to the positions of the bolt when completely withdrawn and when the neck 15 is opposite to the slot 1 respectively, and the engagement of the part 16 with the recesses 4, and of the part 14 of the bolt with the large recess 5 correspond to the positions of the button 12 when about midway along the slot 11 and when at its extreme upper end. In the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the stay 1 is pivoted to a bracket 21 on the side of the door frame, the lower knuckle 22 of the bracket being provided with slots 24 with which the stay 1 is engaged to hold it when in use and when out of use.
