Abstract

1332. Lake, W. E., [Maxim Silencer Co.]. Jan 16. Exhaust-silencers are formed of a number of spiral shells 13 arranged eccentrically, the overlapping ends of the shells forming the inlets and outlets of the spiral chambers formed by the shells. The direction of rotation of the gases is reversed in successive chambers. Some of the shells may be corrugated. The cross-section of the outer chambers is made greater than that of the inner chambers. All of the shells, together with a cylindrical enc!osing- shell 8, are held in grooved end plates. The gases may pass from the inner chamber to the outer or vice versa. Each shell may be formed of two or more overlapping plates forming a number of outlets.
