Abstract

990,347. Exhaust or intake silencers. ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc. May 16, 1963, No. 19578/63. Heading F1B. An exhaust or intake silencer comprises an inner pipe 14, Fig. 2, supported within an outer pipe 10 by depressions 16 which form a plurality of resonater chambers 18 connected to the main flow passage by elongated throats 23. In Figs. 2 and 3 each throat is formed by annular beads on the inner pipe closed by a ring 22 and provided with openings 24, 25, leading to the main flow pipe and the resonater chamber respectively. The effective length of the throat may be adjusted by rotation of the ring 22 to tune the resonator chamber to different frequencies. In a modification the annular throat is formed by an insert in the inner pipe. In Fig. 4 the throat is formed by an axial bead 39 in the inner pipe covered by a plate 38 and having openings 40, 41, at opposite ends; several variations of this form are described. In Fig. 15 the outer member is formed by a part cylindrical shell 116 forming the resonator chamber 120; alternatively it may be formed by a cylindrical member arranged eccentrically to the inner pipe. In Figs. 19, 20, the throat 156 is formed between a straight bead 154 surrounded by a C-shaped bead 156 formed in the outer pipe and extending into contact with the inner pipe; in modifications of this form the throat is formed by a U-shaped or continuous, oval-shaped bead.
