Abstract

1864. Miller, J. M. Jan. 25. Exhaust-silencers comprise cup-shaped members 1 each having a perforated flange 2 and a central opening. Each member is recessed so that the flange of one member bears on the next. They are assembled by through bolts with two hemispherical end pieces 7 and a shell 12, the space between the shell and the members forming a collecting- chamber ; the exhaust entering one end piece is deflected by the curved surfaces towards the perforations in the flanges. The central openings may be of the same size in all the members, or they may increase or decrease in diameter from the inlet to the outlet, or they may be of alternate larger and smaller diameters. In a modified form, two sets of cupshaped members are used, with a central inlet or outlet between them, and outlets or inlets at the ends. A modified method of assembling consists in passing the bolts 24, Fig. 4, through the members and having spacing-sleeves 23 between the members.
