Piston pumps.-A compressor for cooling plants &c. in which air &c. is drawn through the crankcasing and passes to the cylinder through grooves uncovered by the piston at the end of its stroke is of the single-acting and single-stage type. The crank-casing 1 and cylinder 2 are formed in two pieces screwed together as shown, and the air &c. enters through a passage 4. The air passes to the cylinder through grooves 16, Fig. 3, uncovered by the piston 5 at the end of its stroke and escapes through a lift-valve 12. Radiating-ribs 17 are attached to the cylinder.
