Piston packing.-The piston of an internal-combustion engine is packed by a single compound ring which is pressed against the side of the groove and also outward by the fluid pressure. The ring consists of an L-shaped portion F and a rectangular portion G, which are maintained in their relative positions by a pin in the ring F engaging the ring G. The rings may be either split or segmental. In the latter case, the fluid pressure may be supplemented by springs to hold the rings in position. The internal flange of the piston is reduced in diameter to expose the annular portion F<1> of the ring F to the fluid pressure, which is also admitted to the back of the packing by passages E.
