Abstract

Starting; turning-.gear. - A toothed wheel C, carried on arms F hinged on the frame G, is moved into engagement with teeth on the engine flywheel A by a cable or chain wrapped around a drum D to which the wheel C is secured through a one-way clutch. The arms F normally hang vertically, and move to this position on a premature ignition ; a spring may be used to hold the arms in their vertical position. The teeth on the fly - wheel may be formed by securing a chain B on the periphery or side of the wheel; if it is only desired to move the engine to an advantageous position for starting, some of the links of the chain are removed. A spring in the drum D rewinds the cable round the drum, when it is released. To assist the hand in turning the flywheel, the cable is attached to a plunger K, which is pushed inwards to compress a spring M, the spring assisting when the handle is pulled out. The plunger may be used to supply explosive gas or fuel to the engine. Friction wheels may replace the toothed wheels. If it is desired to give intermittent rotation to the fly-wheel, a pawl may be carried by the arm F to prevent return of the wheel C, and the cable can be pulled backwards and forwards several times.
