Abstract

20,539. Vermersch, A. Sept. 26, 1911, [Convention date]. Composite springs; dash-pots; connexions, attachments, and adjustments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs.-Relates to piston-and-cylinder spring devices which are inserted between the end of the usual laminated axle-spring and the spring or dumb-iron on the vehicle frame, and of the kind in which concentric helical springs are employed in conjunction with a liquid brake. According to the invention, the helical springs surround a perforated cylinder in which a piston engages for the purpose of braking the compression as well as the expansion of the springs. Fig. 1 shows concentric helical springs g, h contained within telescopic cylinders a, d connected by eyes c, f with the end of the axle spring and dumb-iron respectively. Adjustably mounted on the base of the cylinder a is a cylinder b in which engages a piston e depending from the top of the cylinder d. The interior of the apparatus is charged with liquid up to the level x-x, and an increasing or decreasing resistance to the compression or expansion of the spring is produced by the passage of liquid through holes l in the walls of the cylinder b. A sheath j is attached to the cylinder b forming with it an annular space into which liquid enters by holes o to keep the apparatus fluid-tight in conjunction with packing m. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) describes also a modification in which the eye 3, shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled), for attachment to the front leaf springs of the car is formed integral with cylinders 1, 2 arranged as shown in plan in Fig. 3 (Cancelled), the springs 8 in the small cylinders 2 being arranged to balance the spring 7 in the large cylinder 1. The pistons 4, 5 for the cylinders 1, 2 respectively are connected with the eye 6 which is connected with the vehicle frame. The compression of the springs is resisted by the passage of oil through ports 11 in the piston 5, one of which is closed by a valve 11 which opens to allow free return of the springs. The part of the piston 4 that protrudes from the cylinder 1 is protected by a sheath 12 of pliable material. The spring 7 may be adjusted by a screw 10. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
