Abstract

10,219. Saint-Senoch, P. H. de. April 28, 1909, [Convention date]. Composite and pneumatic springs.-Relates to suspensions for automobiles &c. of the kind in which the pneumatic cylinder is in communication with a reservoir of compressed air on the vehicle. According to the invention, the piston 3 and piston-rod are formed with a passage 7 through which the air in the cylinder 6 can pass to and from a reservoir 11. When the piston descends to near the bottom of the cylinder, the passage 7 is closed by a fixed plunger 18, and the piston is thus cushioned. Between the reservoir 11 and the cylinder is arranged a valve box 10 divided into two chambers 13, 14 by a partition 15 fitted with a valve 16. The air can pass freely from the cylinder to the reservoir through the valve 16, but it can return only through a by-pass 20 having a constricted passage which can be regulated by a screw 21. Thus, rebound of the spring is damped. Figs. 2 and 3 show in detail a modification of the fixed plunger 18 in the cylinder. It is grooved as at 19 so as to cut off the passage when the piston reaches the plane a-b.
