Abstract
4698. McDonnell, R. W., and Davie, W. D. March 20, 1913, [Convention date]. Composite and pneumatic springs; connexions and attachments applicable generally for tensile and compressive springs.-Consists in providing a shock - absorber for use with the transverse springs of the ' Ford ' type of motor-car, and of the form particularly described and shown. Fig. 1 shows the end of the transverse laminar spring 15 connected bv a link 14 with a rod 7 carrying a piston 10, which engages in a casing connected by a bracket 4 with the axle casing: A helical spring 17 is arranged between the piston 10 and the bracket 4 and the initial compression of the spring is adjusted by removing the cap 2 of the casing 1 and operating the nuts 11. When shocks occur, the casing 1 moves upward, compressing the spring 17, and air passes freely by the leather packing - ring 9 into the space 18 above the piston, the air being compressed during the subsequent recoil. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) also describes the twin spring shackle shown in Fig. 2 (Cancelled), comprising slotted piston-rods 7, interconnected by a pin 26 attached to the end of the axle spring, and carrying pistons 8 engaging in cylinders 1 interconnected by a pin 24 attached to the frame spring or dumb-iron. The cylinders l. are interconnected at the bottom by an adjustable link 32 which enables the twin shackle to be adapted to various widths of springs. Fig. 6 (Cancelled) shows an alternative form of piston having a spring packing-ring 38 and a spring-pressed valve 40, this valve allowing free movement of the piston in one direction. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
