Abstract
19,605. Cowles, A. H. Aug. 27. Hydrochloric acid and sodium or potassium silico-aluminate are prepared by treating with air and steam a mixture of alkali chloride, carbon, and materials containing silica and alumina. Examples of ingredients are clay, bauxite, shale, and the feldspars, and charcoal, coal, carboniferous shale, and sawdust. All the ingredients should be as free from iron as possible. As the function of the carbon is to render the mass porous it may be replaced by other bodies that have the same effect, such as gelatinous silica, hydrated gelatine, sodium bicarbonate, and tartaric acid.
