Driving - arrangements. - Variable - speed friction gearing applicable to a doubling-frame comprises a driving-wheel H, Fig. 1, movable laterally with its shaft C<2> towards a driven disk G<1> on a perpendicular shaft G. The shaft C<2>, its motor, belt-pulley, or other driving- means C, and means for moving the wheel H axially to vary the speed are all supported upon a base A, which is adapted to rock about a pivot shaft B. Springs or elastic ropes E<2>, Fig. 4, acting upon standards D<1>, E<1>, Fig. 1, hold the wheel H against the disk G<1>. An arm K for traversing the wheel H may be operated by a screwed spindle K', Fig. 4, secured to it and passing through a rotatable nut K<2>. The nut K<2> may be operated by a worm L and a spindle L<1> actuated through ratchet gearing L<5>, Fig. 1, from a shaft L<9> of the machine driven. The spindle L<1> is adapted to be raised to disconnect the worm L by toggle mechanism N, which is operated and locked when required by spring rods Q, S, respectively. The wheel H is traversed backwards by friction gears T, T' brought into action by an idler T<2> connected to a hand-lever T<4>.
