Abstract
158,054. Scott, H. L. Oct. 22, 1919. Reversing-gearing for testing machines in which tension is applied to the specimen by means of the longitudinal movement of a screw comprises a driving-nut engaging a screw and worked by worm gears, a pair of worms being mounted to rotate the nut alternately in opposite directions. The screw 13 is mounted to slide but not rotate in a casing 10 secured to an upright 12. A nut 15 surrounds the screw and is provided on the outside with worm teeth. Thrust bearings are placed between the nut and the casing. A pair of worms 22 are carried on short shafts in a frame 20 pivoted on a shaft 19 and motion is imparted to either worm by bevel and pulley gear, from a motor. The frame 20 may be rocked to bring either worm into gear with the teeth on the nut by a bell-crank 38, 34, one arm of which extends through the frame while the other arm is moved by a slide 39. The slide has three notches 40, 41, 42 to define the two in-gear positions and a neutral position. The screw may be reversed automatically, projections 55, 56 clamped to the screw engaging adjustable screw stops 57 in the ends of the slide. The slide is thrown over with a snap by a spring and lever device. A lever 45 pivoted at 47 to the casing is pivoted to an arm 50 also pivoted to the casing at 51 and connected to the lever 45 by a spring. When the links are moved past the straight position, the spring snaps the slide rapidly to the other extreme.
