Abstract

13,993. Shaw, H. S. Hele-, Martineau, F. L., and Beacham, T. E. June 15. Liquid - pressure engines. - Relates to hydraulic motors of the radial - cylinder type described in Specification 12,943/10, in which the pistons co - operate with a cam or cam-path formed according to a formula given in Specification 336/12. Special forms of machines are illustrated in Figs. 1, 3, and 7, and devices are provided, as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, for bypassing certain of the cylinders in a motor. In the machine illustrated in Fig. 1, the distributing-valve 4 is coned at one end and the cylinder body 11 rotates upon it. Ports 7 in the member 5 lead to ports 8 which are in communication w i t h ports 10. Slots 20 in the cylinder walls allow the longitudinal movement of, and serve to guide, the pistons 16. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the cylinder body is held stationary and the valve 26 is secured to the revolving cam-track. The liquid is led through passages in the member 23 to annular passages 38, 39, whence it is led to ports 41, 43. Leakage is carried away through the passage 46 and a pipe connected at 47. The motor-wheel shown in Fig. 7 is provided with a stationary valve. The cylinder body 50 is held rigid with the stationary valve by dogs engaging corresponding dogs on the valve flange 51. A sleeve 57 for distributing the liquid is secured to the cam-plate 52 and in it the ports 59 communicate alternately with the suction and delivery grooves 54. Leakage is conveyed away by the pipe 59<a> and bores 60. For low pressure and high speeds, the ports opposite one half of the cam may be by-passed. The range of speed is thereby increased. Fig. 8 shows diagrammatically one method of by-passing. The pipe 61 branches at 62 to feed both pressure ports P, and one branch is provided with a valve 66. A non-return valve 67 allows the passage of fluid only from the suction pipe 64 to the pressure port P, which is at the time cut off in order to prevent undue suction in that cylinder. For reversible machines, the system shown in Fig. 9 is used. In this, one branch of each branched liquid pipe is provided with a valve 68. Each valve is provided with a straight-through port 69 and a port 70 leading to a non-return valve 72 permitting communication between the pressure and exhaust pipes.
