Furnace fireplaces; baffles; stoking; ashes, removing.-A furnace fire-box is divided by a partition 6, Fig. 1, into front and rear compartments 9, 10, the front compartment serving mainly for the coking of fuel fed thereto through the feed-shoot 11, and the rear compartment serving as a combustion chamber for the fuel and the gases passing over the partition 6 from the front compartment. The gases are directed downwards by a shoulder or baffle 3 in the roof of the fire-box, and meet hot air discharged from openings 8 in the partition 6. Fuel is fed from the front compartment to the rear by a rake 16, Figs. 1 and 4, provided with pivoted tines 18, which only engage with the fuel when the rake is moved towards the rear. Scrapers 24 are also mounted on the rake, and are adapted to remove the ashes from the ash-pit when the rake moves forward.
