BOILER-FURNAGE Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 3, 1908. Serial No. 441,727.
To all whom it may concern:
f Be it known that I, JOHN ONEILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Boiler- Furnace, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved boiler furnace, more especially designed for water-heating systems, and arranged to utilize the heat from the burning fuel to the fullest advantage, to render the furnace exceedingly strong and durable b constructing the same mainly of sheet meta and brick-work, and to allow convenient cleaning ofthe furnace of soot whenever it is desired to do so.
The 'invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this s ecification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the im rovement; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view ol the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
The shell A, of the boiler is set on a suitable foundation B, and within the said shell A is arranged a re box O, provided in its bottom with a grate D, below which is arranged an ash it E, access beingA had to the lire box O and t e ash pit E by suitable doors O', E. From the rear end of the fire box C leads a set of smoke and gas flues F, into a combustion chamber G, the u per end of which connects with the rear ends of a set of return smoke and as flues H, extending from' one end of the she l A to the other and passing over the re box C, the forward ends of the said return flues H opening into an uptake I, arranged on the front end of the shell A, and connecting at its upper end with a heating chamber J, surrounding the top and sides of the shell A. The heating chamber J is provided at or near its middle with a partition J', formin a balile and extending from the to of the c amber J to within a distance of the ottom thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings, so that the smoke and gases circulate around the shell A, as indicated by the arrows. The rear upper end of the heating chamber J is connected with a duct K, extending over the combustion chamber G and leading to the chimney, for carrying off the smoke and gasesto a suitable place of discharge.
From the top of the shell A extend the water outlet pipes L, connected with radiators or other heating apparatus, from which lead thereturn pipes N, back into the shell at the lower rear portion thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings.
The combustion chamber G, the heating chamber J and the duct K are built of brick, while the shell A, the fire box O and the uptake I are preferably made of boiler iron, so that a long life of the vboiler furnace is insured. Access is had to the combustion chamber G through a suitable door O, and access is also had to the heating chamber J through suitable doors P, to allow of cleaning the combustion chamber Grk and the heating chamber J of soot, cinders and the like.
When the furnace is in use, the smoke and ases arising from the burning fuel in the gre box O pass through the i'lues F into the combustion chamber G, from the latter through the return lines H into the uptake I, from which the smoke and gases pass into the upper front portion of the heating chamber J, to then travel downward therein against the partition J and upward in the're'ar portion of the heating chamber J, to finally reach the duct K for carrying the smoke and that by circulating the smoke and gases in the manner described, the heat is utilized to the fullest advantage for heating the water that the heat from the fire box O and the heat ofthe smoke and gases passing through the sets of flues F and H and through the ycombustion chamber G and the heating chamber J, causes the heating of the water contained in the shell A practically without loss of heat, especially as the smoke and gases are caused to travel up and down and rearwardly in the chamber J, thus coming in contact with the exterior surface of the top and sides of the shell A.
The boiler furnace shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, is not liable easily to getv out of order and is readily cleaned of soot and other impurities whenever it is deemed necessary.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l` A boilerI furnace, comprising a :lire box, a set of smoke flues extending rearwardly from the said iire box, a combustion chamber into which discharge the said smoke lues, a set ofreturn smoke iiues above the said fire box smoke iues and extending from the said combustion chamber, a shell for the said 'lire box and the said sets of smoke lines and forming a water compartment having outlet and return pipes, an uptake on the front end of the said shell and into which discharges the said set of return smoke lines, and a return heating chamber exterior of the sides and top of the said shell and into the liront upper'end of which discharges the said uptake, the said heating chamber having a transverse baHie extending from the top of the chamber to within a distance from the bottom thereof, and a duct leading from the rear upper end of the said chamber for carrying ofll the smoke and gases.
2. A boiler furnace, comprising a iire box, a set of smoke iiues extending rearwardly from the said lire box, a combustion chamber into Which discharge the said smoke lues, a set of return smoke lues above the said iire box smoke iues and extending from the said combustion chamber, a shell for the said ire box and the said sets of smoke flues and 'forming a water compartment having outlet and return pipes, an uptake on the front end of the said shell and into which discharges the said set oi' return smoke lues, and a return heating chamber exterior of the sides and top of the said shell and into-the front upper end of which discharges the said uptake, the said heating chamber having a transverse ba'Hie extending from the top of the chamber to within a distance from the bottom thereof, and a duct leading from the rear upper end of the said chamber for carrying oiil the smoke and gases, the said combustion chamber, the said heating chamber and the said duct being of brick.
