FURNACE `J. W. LAUREN Filed July 26, 1922 Patented May 1 2, 1925.
p UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN w. LAUREN, or STERLING,
ILLINOIS.
-ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF FURNACE.
Application medmy 2e, 1922. serial No. 577,519.`
To all whom t may concern.:
4Be '1t known that I, J oHN W. LAUREN, a citizen of the Republic of Finland, and a resident of Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and Sta-te of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Furnace; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to a furnace in which powdered coal is adapted to be burned.
AS these furnaces are now constructed, the
come the above 4noted objection by making of these cinders,
provision' for the escape pit in the and returning the same to the ash bottom of the lire box.
@ther objects and advantages arising from the construction will become more apparent from the following description and disclosures.
This invention comprises the novel snucture and combination of arts hereinafter described and more particu arly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which ,illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which simil-.1r referencel numerals refer to Similar Afeatures in the different views:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a furnace embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section through the furnace substantially upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1. A
I Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section through thefurnace substantially upon the line 3-3of Figure 1.
As,- shown on the drawings:
In the drawings, there is lillustrated a v of this invention,
furnace-.adapted for. burning powdered coa-l comprlsing the front wall-1, the side walls 2, the rear wall 3 of the fire box, the rear vertical wall 4 and the bottom 5 of the 'fire' box which usually consist of lire brick. The furnace may consist of any usual known construction having the pipes P for admitting the powdered coal and the a-ir pipes Q connectedltherewith as usual'. l
A boiler ofusual construction is supported in the top of the furnace which boiler communicates with the usual water heating pipes 7 in the furnace.
Between the rearwall 3 of-the lire box and the rear wall 4 there is usually a horizontal surface such as 6 upon which those cinders collect which do not pass among the water tubes 7. When powdered coal is used, a large quantity of cinders ioat up through the furnace -and settle upon the horizontal surface orledge 6 and tend to clog the ways between the water tubes. My invention is designed to overcome this defect by forming chutes from the horizontal ledge 6 to the bottom of the ire box through which the cinders may pass to the bottom of the fire box. In the present insta-nce, a vpair of inclined chutes or assages 8 and 9 are formed in the rear wall of the fire box from the .top of the ledge 6 to the lower rea-r corner of the fire bx`; the rear wall being sufficiently thick for this urpose. Closures 10 are preferably placec across the lower en ds of the chutes upon a rod 11 supported in the rear wall 3 and extending beyond one wall and equipped with an o erating handle 12. The cinders which usua ly collected on the ledge 6 will now pass down the chutes 8 and 9 by gravity and rest against the closures 10 which may be eriodically opened by turning the crank 12 1n the proper direction to permit the cinders to pass into the fire box.
It will accordingly be apparent that in a 'furnace involving this invention, the water flues or pipes are always kept free from having cinders pile-therearound, and that the cinders are returned to the ash pit through the chutes and may periodically be removed from the furnace.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departingfrom the principles ILLINOIS, ASSIGNoIt, BY MESNIL ASSIGNMENTS, Tok RAYMOND Bacs. ENGINEERING co., or cnIoAeo,
and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a furnace, a lire-box, and a watertube boiler supported above the rear portion thereof, the fire-box having a rear wall which slopes upwardly and rearwardly to direct the products of combustion toward and between the boiler tubes, this rear wall hav,- ing4 upwardly Haring open ended passages therein, the upper ends of which receive cinders and ash from the stream of gases passing thereover, and the lower ends of which open into the bottom of the fire-box, and discharge the cinders thereinto. a
2. In a furnace, a fire-box, and a watertube boiler supported above the rear portion thereof, the fire-box having a rear wall which slopes upwardly and rearwardly to direct the products of combustion toward and between the boiler tubes, this rear wall having upwardly Haring open ended passages therein, the upper ends of which receive cinders and ash from the stream of gases passing thereover, and the lower ends of which open into the bot-ttm of the fireboX, and discharge the ci 'iers thereinto, closures for the bottom 0: hese passages,
and means for operating these closures from outside the furnace.
3. In a furnace, a fire-box having front and side walls and a cover arch for the'forward portion of the fire-box, and a thick upwardly and rearwardly inclined rear wa-ll having upwardly flaring open-ended passages therein, the lower ends of which communicate with the bottom of the firebox, a water tube boiler above the fire-box with the water-tubes supported at their front ends on the cover arch, ano supported intermediately and at their rear ends on the rear wall, the Haring upper ends of the passages being beneath the rear portion of the tubes to receive cinders deposited from the gas stream flowing therebetween, which cinders are discharged through the passages back into the bottom of the rebox.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. LAUREN.
