To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, HENRY Snus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie,
- in the county of Erie and State of Penn.
sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined WVater- Heaters and Garbage-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for heating Water and consuming garbage; such devices being so constructed and arranged that the heating of the water and burning of the garbage is effected by the use of fuel, usually coal, in the firebox; and the object of this invention is to provide a garbage supporting grate in the fire-box, so located therein that the front end thereof is secured to the front end of the fire-box, somewhat above the fire-door thereof, and from that point the garbage grate inclines rearwardly and downwardly to the rear end of the fire-box, where a door is provided,
whereby any unconsumed part of the garbage can be removed.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a vertical, longitudinal, central section of my combined water-heater and garbage-burner. Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the same, on the line X-X in Fig. 1.
In the construction of my combined water-heater and garbageburner, I preferably make the outer portion thereof, of two wrought metal shells, A, and A; the shell A, within the shell A, and spaced therefrom so as to leave a water containing chamber (3, between said shells, extending from the base B thereof, entirely around the sides, end and top thereof. In the base of the chamber inclosed by the inside shell A, I place grate-bars A the rear. and front ends of which rest upon ledges a a, on the base of the inside shell A; the entire structure above described, being preferably supported on a convenient base Bhprovided at its front end by an ash door B.
In the front end of the structure, somewhat above the grate-bars A I make'a fuel-door opening A", which is provided with a door A. In the top of the structure I secure a smoke-flue O, and communicating with the water space 0, between the shells A A, I make an opening a, in the lower part of the outer shell A, to which a water supply pipe (not shown) maybe connected, and I also make a discharge opening of, in the top of the outer shell A, for ltjhe gischarge. of hot water from the chamer i In the front of the inside shell A, at a point above the fuel-door opening A I secure a series of tubes D, which tubes extend therefrom rearwardly and downwardly, to a point in the rear of the inner shell A, and are secured therein, so that both the front and rear ends of these tubes communicate with the water space C, between the shells, A A. The tubes D, are so spaced apart as to form a suitable grate upon which the garbage is to be burned, and being connected at their ends with the water space C, the water therein circulates therethrough much more rapidly than it does through horizontal tubes, and thereby the heating effectiveness thereof is materially increased.
In the front end of the structure, somewhat above the front ends of the tubes D, I make a garbage receiving opening E, provided with a door E, and in the rear end of the structure, somewhat above the lower and rear ends of the tubes I), I make an opening l provided with a door F, through which any unconsumed portions of the garbage can be removed. Through the outer shell A, opposite the front and rear ends of said tubes, I make openings which are normally closed by screw plugs a a which may be removed when it is necessary to clean the tubes I). This tubular garbagegrate, it will be observed, inclines down ward from the front to the rear of the structure. The object of this construction is to provide means whereby the'products of combustion, from the fuel-burning chamber G, can escape into the chamber above the garbage-grate, as when a lot of wet garbage is placed upon the garbagegrate, it normally is deposited upon the inclined portion thereof, leaving the upper end of the grate with little or none of the garbage resting thereon, and therefore leaving a free passage from the fire-chamber between the upper ends ofv the tubes D, formin said grate, and as the garbage is consumed, any unconsumed part thereof, works down the inclined garbage-grate to the opening 1*, through which it can be readily removed.
Having described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
1. In a combined water-heater and garbage-burner, the combination of two shells forming a heating chamber, one shell so arranged within the other as to form a Waterchamber between them; a fuel-grate in the bottom of the heating-chamber, a door to supply fuel to said grate, agarbage-grate above the fuel-burning grate having parallel bars, extending from above the fuel door in the front wall of the heating-chamber at an inclination downwardly to a point in the rear wall of the heating-chamber slightly above the rear end of the fuel grate adapted to permit garbage placed thereon to move downwardly so as to insure a free passage through the upper end of said garbage grate for the products of combustion from the fuel grate, doors in the front and rear of the heating-chamber above the ends of the garbage-grate, and a smoke exit opening in the top tially as set forth. I
2. In a combined water-heater and garof the heating-chamber, substanbarge-burner, the combination of two shells forming a heating-chamber, one shell so arranged within the other as to form a waterchamber between them, a fuel-grate in the bottom of the heating chamber, a door to supply fuel to said grate, a series of parallel water-tubes above the fuel-burning grate, extendin from above the fuel door in the front waIl of the heating-chamber at an inclination downwardly to a point in the rear wall of the heating-chamber slightly above the rear end of the fuel-grate, and communicating at their front and rear ends with the water-chamber, and forming a grate in said heating-chamber adapted to permit garbage placed thereon to move downwardly so as to insure a free passage through the upper end of said garbage grate for the products of combustion from the fuel grate, doors in the front and rear ends of the heating-chamber above the ends of the garbage-grate, water inlet and outlet openings in the outer shell of the heatingchamber, and a smoke exit from the top ofthe heating-chamber, substantially as set forth.
