- My invention has for its object the production of a furnace designed to secure more economical combustion of fuel which I accomplish by providing a circuitous route around which the gases of the fire combustion travel and unite with-the gases coming from the fire grate so that all of the heat units contained therein are utilized by mixing the gases and bringing the same under conditions which further oxygenize said gases, before they escape to atmosphere.

To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, DANIEL O. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawing, is a description.
My invention has for its object the production of a furnace designed to secure more economical combustion of fuel which I accomplish by providing a circuitous route around which the gases of the fire combustion travel and unite with-the gases coming from the fire grate so that all of the heat units contained therein are utilized by mixing the gases and bringing the same under conditions which further oxygenize said gases, before they escape to atmosphere.
In the drawings I have illustrated what-I now consider the preferred form of my invention, although the same may be changed in regard to the details thereofwithout departing from the spirit of my lnvention in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectlonal view of a tubular boiler and furnace with my construction applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 S of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional detail through the bridge wall.
In the construction shown in the drawing, A is a furnace, A. is a fire chamber provided with a door a, A is a grate, A the ash pit, a the ash pit door and A the water jacket of a furnace of ordinary construction.
B is a tubular boiler also of ordinary construction, set into a wall B having at the rear thereof and beneath the same the chamber B B is the steam dome, B the stack, both of well known construction.
C is the bridge wall between the furnace and the boiler, which is formed of fire brick, the grate A connecting with the front of said wall, the boiler B connecting with the rear thereof, as shown. Rising from said bridge wall is a forwardly inclined partition C which extends from said wall to the crown sheet C through which are openings 0 near the top thereof. C is a central vertical partition extending from the crown sheet C to the bridge wall. This partition is provided with openings therethrough near the bottom thereof just above the bridge wall. Both of these walls are constructed of fire brick or other fire proof material. Between the partitions C and C is a chamber Between the vertical partitions C and the .flues b of the boiler is another chamber 0*.
Extending throughthe bridge wall, connecting with the chamber B and the chamber C isan opening D for the purpose hereinafter described. Extending also through the bridge wall and communicating with the ash pit is an opening a shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, and closed by the door a This opening is utilized for removing any dust, cinders or other matter collected therein from the products of combustion passing through the chambers C, 0*.
The operation of my furnace is as fol lows: The fire is started on the grate A in the usual way, the products of combustion passing from the combustion chamber A7 through the openings 0 in the top of the forwardly inclined wall G into the chamber C thence downwardly and through the openings 0 in a central vertical wall G? into chamber C, thence through the flues 7) between the flue sheets 6 into the chamber B at the rear and beneath the boiler B. I/Vhen the gases leave the fines Z) at the rear of the boiler and pass downwardly into the larger chamber beneath the boiler the heavier gases will separate from the lighter and pass through the opening D into the bridge wall back into the chamber C where they mingle with the products of combustion passing from the fire chamber A through the chamber C to chamber C as previously explained. The lighter gases passing through the chamber B will rise through the openings between the tubes 7) and find their exit through the opening D .to the stack B and thence to atmosphere.
I/Vhen the furnace is in operation 'a draft is exerted through the ash pit and fire chamber A from whence the gases pass over the inclined wall G through the openings 0. The shape of the chamber formed between the inclined wall C and the vertical Wall O converging toward the bottom, intensifies the draft through the openings 0 into the chamber C from whence the gases are distributed as previously explained.
I claim:
1. The combination with a furnace of a bridge wall having two partitions extending from the grate line to the crown sheet of the furnace 'and having passageways between said partitions, the forward partition having an opening therethrough at the top thereof and the rear partition having an opening therethrough near the bottom thereof, a boiler having flues between its flue sheets extending to a chamber at the rear and bottom of said boiler, the aforesaid bridge wall having an opening therethrough communicating with said last named chamber and one of the aforesaid passageways, whereby the heavier gases may pass therethrough and mingle with the gases passing to the boiler to be used the second time, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a furnace, of a bridge wall having two partitions extending from the grate line to the crown sheet with passageways on each side thereof, one
of said partitions being inclined forwardly and having openings therethrough near the top of said partition, the other partition extending vertically having openings near the bottom thereof, the boiler of said furnace having flues between its flue sheets extending to the chamber at the rear and bottom of said boiler, the bridge wall being provided with an opening therethrough extending from said last named chamber to the passageway between the vertical partition and the boiler, through which the gases of heavier specific gravity will pass and be used again while the lighter gases rise through the exit opening to atmosphere.
