UNITED STATES FRIEDERICK LINDRUM,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOILER-SETTING SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,357, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed May 10, 1888- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDERICK LINDRUM, a citizen of Prussia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Settings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to boiler-settings of steam-generating boilers.
It has for its object to provide an efficient and economical means for sustaining the boiler and applying the furnace heat thereto.
It consists in the construction hereinafter described, and embraced in the claims.
The accompanying drawings show my improvements in boiler-settings along with my improvements in a skimmer forming a division, filed'July 27, 1888, Serial No. 281,215, of this application, this application relating to my improvements in boiler-settings, irrespective of other and incidental features that may be shown or used therewith.
Figure l in the accompanying drawings is a plan view of a tubular boiler and its setting, the latter being partly broken away and the upper portions removed to more fully disclose the planes below. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view, partly in front elevation and partly in section, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and the drawings.
The boiler-shell A may be of the ordinary horizontal form or somewhat varied therefrom, but is preferably shown as of the ordinary horizontal pattern, with the usual steamdome a and man-hole plate a.
The boiler is shown as set in brick-work or masonry of any kind, the fire-box F, ash-pit G, bridge-wall H, combustion-chamber I, and back chamber J being of the usual construction, and the course of the products of combustion from the fire-box to the back chamber and into the rear ends of the tubes being indicated by the arrows.
Serial No. 278,464. (No model.)
Instead of having the smoke-stack or chimney at the front of the boiler over the front chamber K, as is usual in boiler-settings of this kind, and in which no further benefit can be derived from the products of combustion, which immediately pass from the front end of the flues into the stack, I prefer to construct my setting with return-fines L along each side of the boiler, as shown, uniting them at the chimney M in the rear of the back chamber. Under this construction I am enabled to utilize more of the heat than would be the case if it passed directly into a'chimney at the front, for, as indicated in Fig. 3, the sides and a portion of the top of the boiler-shell are exposed to the action of the heat in the side fines L.
The iron boiler-front N has an arched rib n, spanning the front of the fire-box and extending inwardly to a point below the front end of the boiler, to sustain the section walls or arches nateach side. From the top.of this arched rib a vertical rib n extends to the top arch 7c of the front chamber K, dividing it into two parts, each connecting with the chimney through its own return side flue L. The boiler-front is provided with the usual ash-pit doors g, fire-doors f, front chamber or fine doors k, and sight-hole doors I for the inspection of the return-lines L.
At the rear of the boiler-setting, in the side wall, is a man-hole door j, through which the attendant may enter to clean out the back chamber.
I also place a damper in the chimney to aid in retarding combustion when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the tubular boiler wit-h the front chambers formed by the arch ed and vertical ribs, the back chamber, the side flues connecting the front chambers with the chimney, and the-fire-box and combustionchamber, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of a boiler with a boilerfronthaving a vertical rib and a rib joining the vertical rib at its bottom and extending inwzndly under the boiler, whereby two front chambers are formed.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of a boiler and a boiler- 5 front having arib spanning the front of the fire-box, and a vertical rib extending upward from the rib spanning the front of the fire-box.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
FRIEDERICK LINDRUM.
