Shaft couplings; universal joints.-In flexible shaft couplings of the type in which elastic disks, secured at their centres to the respective shaft ends, are coupled together at their peripheries, disks are cut away at their peripheries, as shown, for example at b in Fig. 1. A form with only four peripheral arms such as b is also shown. Greater flexibility is obtained by connecting a number of pairs of such disks in succession. The disks may taper in thickness from the centre to the periphery, or the same effect may be obtained by bolting together superposed disks of different diameters as shown in Fig. 4. The coupling is stated to be especially applicable to the transmission system of a motor vehicle.
