Balance gearing; clutches, friction.-In differential gearing, applicable to motor-vehicles, one or more driving-shafts transmit motion to driven shafts through two differential gears. which are geared together so that part of the energy is transmitted through each differential. The driving-shafts 1, 21 each carry planet-pinions gearing with bevel - wheels 6, 8 and 26, 28 respectively; the wheels 8, 28 are fixed to the driven shafts 9, 29 and the wheels 6, 26 are loose on the driving-shafts. Spur-wheels 41, 44, fixed to a sleeve 42 mounted loosely on a stub axle 48, gear with the wheels 6, 28 respectively, and the wheels 8, 26 are connected by a wheel 45 loosely mounted on the sleeve. By means of a clutch 49 having an engaging surface formed by cork insets 55, the wheel 45 can be clutched to the sleeve 42 when it is desired to render the differential gearing ineffective. In the case of automobiles, it is preferred that the shafts 1, 21 should be driven from a single shaft through variable-speed gearing.
