Abstract

10,201. Mackintosh, J., and Mowatt, H. April 30. Drawings to Specification. Compartments.-In ships constructed with watertight compartments and fitted with airpumps and compressors for forcing out water that has entered by accident to the hull, the air-service mains are connected to the ordinary bilge and ballast services in order that they may serve both to supply air to as well as draw water from the compartments. The pumping- plant is situated some distance above the upper deck and may be driven independently of the main engines. The branch pipes into the compartments are provided with shut-off valves in order that the supply of air to any compartment may be cut off. Instead of supplying air under pressure, gas generated by chemical substances in contact with water, or water decomposed by electrolysis, may be used.
