Jacks.-In a rack-and-pinion jack in which the pinion is operated by ratchet gear, means are provided for regulating the actuating and retaining pawls to permit the load to be lowered step by step. The actuating-pawl 16, which sits in the toe of the operating-lever 14, engages a ratchet-wheel 10 fast on the pinion shaft 5. The retaining-pawl 19 sits loosely in a recess in the main frame. The pawls are connected by spring links 22, 23 to a pin 28<1> on a plate 29 revolubly mounted in the casing. The links are composed of relatively-sliding parts enclosing a cylindrical recess in which is carried a spiral spring. The plate 29 is turned by a lever 30 into the ' up ' or ' down ' position, in which positions the pawls tend to engage, or disengage from, the ratchet-wheel. When the plate 29 is set to the ' down ' position, the pawl 19 is moved out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel, but the pawl 16 is prevented from doing so by a projection 18 in the interior of the casing. When the lever 14 is raised its toe presses the retaining-pawl into engagement again, and allows the pawl 16 to fly out after it has passed the abutment 18. The parts then assume the position shown in dotted lines. The lever 14 can then be lowered, the pawl 19 being kept in engagement by the reaction of the load.
