7871. Skeffington, A. April 1. Mattresses. - A collapsible section for a sectional mattress comprises a band stretched between side supports, and means for slacking the band so as to leave a lateral aperture through which a bed-pan may be introduced. In Fig. 1, the band E is stretched between supports B<1> pivoted to the frame B and adapted to be drawn towards one another by turning a spindle D carrying nuts D<1>, D<2>. The band is shown collapsed in Fig 2. The rods E<1>, at one or both ends of the band, may be removable from the supporting-jaws B<4>, in which case it is not necessary to lower the supports B' completely. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the supports F are lowered by a spindle H and cords H<1>; while in the form shown in Fig. 5, bolts L<1> and nuts L<2> are provided for stretching or slacking the band. According to the Provisional Specification, collapsible sections filled with air or water may be used, or the section may be mounted on springs which can be collapsed by means of flexible wire cables.
