5146. Boult, A. J., [Sholes Typewriter Co., Z. G.]. Aug. 15, 1911. Type-lever actions; letter-spacing mechanism. -(1) The hangers for the type-levers 13 consist of plates 14<a>, Fig. 6, arranged in slots 13<a> in the segment 12, Fig. 1, each plate carrying two type-levers which are guided by the walls of the slot. The plates are formed with a bevel 15<a> and a lug 17<a> which fit the front of the segment, the lug receiving a screw 19<a>. (2) To facilitate assembling of the action the key-levers 14, sub-levers 18, and the letterspacing universal bar 34 are mounted on a comb 23 which can be drawn forward on guides 54. The comb 23 is formed with standards 53 which support a fulcrum-tube 16 for the keylevers and a rock-shaft 31 which carries the universal bar. The sub-levers have a pin-andslot connexion 26 with the key-levers and are pivoted on a bar 24, which is mounted in the comb and can be turned through a right-angle to release the sub-levers, these being formed with open slots 20. (3) The usual hooked arms 15 whereby the key-levers are pivoted on the tube 16 are arranged at the ends of the keylevers and are engaged by springs 17<a> which oppose the lifting action of the returning- springs 30. The universal bar 34 is engaged by flats at the end of the key-levers.
