Abstract

140,914. James, R. W., (Remington Typewriter Co.). May 1, 1919 Type-lever machines; accenting-arrangements; types.-In machines in which the type-levers operate a universal bar for con. trolling the letter-spacing mechanism, the type-levers that carry accent-types operate an interponent which can be so adjusted as to operate or to silence the universal bar. The interponent may be controlled by the shift mechanism, in which case certain of the type-levers are provided with an uppercase accent-type and a lower-case character-type, or vice versa. Preferably, the accent-types 88 are, as shown in Fig. 4, formed as upper-case characters on L- shaped blocks which are formed also with lower-case character-types 86, the accenttypes being offset one letter space to the left in order that the accents may be printed after the letters. The L-shaped blocks may, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 4, be arranged in a nested group at the right-hand side of the basket and be operated by keys 34<a>. A similar group of L-shaped blocks provided with upper-case character-types and lower-case accent-types, especially for subscribed accents, may be arranged at the left-hand side of the basket. The interponent 70, shown in rear view in Fig. 2 and in section in Fig. 3, consists of a sector which is mounted on a screw 76 on the type-lever segment 23 and is formed with an offset flange 73 arranged in a recess 72 in the segment and a recess 68, Fig. 5, at the right-hand end of the universal bar 37. The interponent is formed with four slots 74 which are at the same distance apart as the radial slots 22 in the segment. In the lower-case position of the platen, the tines 74a are in register with the slots 22, and when the accent-type levers are operated, the interponent is moved rearwardly on the screw 76 and the universal bar is operated. When the platen is shifted to the upper-case position, the interponent is rocked upwards, by the devices described below, the slots 74 being brought into register with the first four slots 22, and the fifth slot 22 being uncovered. If the accent-type levers are then operated, the universal bar is silent, since the recess 68 is of sufficient depth to prevent the accent-type levers from engaging the universal bar. The device for rocking the interponent consists of a lever 75 pivoted on the screw 76, a coupling-pin 77 on the interponent passing through a hole in the lever. A spring 76 is arranged between the interponent and the lever. The vertically-movable member 13 for shifting the platen is provided with an adjustable bracket 80 which engages a roller 78 on the lever and serves to rock the lever when the member 13 is shifted. The lever is returned yieldingly by means of a spring 83 connected to an arm 84 of the bracket, the arrangement preventing the interponent from binding the type-levers if the shift-key is released before the type-levers have passed out of the slots 74. As applied to segment-shift machines, the bracket 80 is mounted on the stationary framework. An interponent may be arranged at any part of the segment. The universal bar may be associated with the letter-spacing mechanism described in Specification 105,865.
