26,492. Allison, C. A., [Motor Appliances Co.]. Nov. 27. Fixed-abutment type.-The shaft 2 of an engine is turned for starting by an engine of the oscillating-vane type wherein compressed air acts on a piston 12 in a cylinder 10. The curved axis of this cylinder is concentric with the shaft, the power being transmitted through a curved piston-rod 13, and a spring-pressed pawl 29, which is carried by a crank loose on the shaft and engages with a disk 4 fixed on the shaft. To return the piston 12 after a power stroke, a second curved cylinder 11 with corresponding rod 20 is used, a four-way handcontrolled cock 23 regulating the supply and exhaust of compressed air to the two cylinders. A latch 34 retains the apparatus in its idle position, the pawl being held away from the disk by a stop.
