Abstract
138,955. Graham, J. E. Nov. 26, 1918. Valves; valve-gear.-An engine for use as an engine-starter or as an independent power unit is brought into action by a hand-actuated valve 15 supplying compressed air from a receiver to the cylinder 1 through a carburettor 5. The valve 15 can only be opened when the parts are in the position shown, and closes when the piston 2 begins to move, so that the opening of the valve causes a single reciprocation of the piston. The power and pump pistons 2, 24 are connected to a disk 26 which drives the crank-shaft 27 of the engine to be started by means of pawls 29, the disk being returned after each actuation by a coil spring. In the position shown, a Jever 36 rests in a recess 38 in the disk 26 and a distance-piece 39 is in its lowest position, enabling the lever 31 to be actuated for opening the valve 15. The power cylinder 1 has piston-controlled exhaust ports 16 and additional exhaust ports 19 in the cylinder head controlled by a valve 17, Fig. 3. This valve is closed by the explosion pressure during the out-stroke, opened by the spring 20 when the exhaust ports 16 are uncovered, and closed at the end of the in-stroke by a spring 21 on the piston.
