Loading and unloading by two or more cranes with means for transferring load from one to another ; overhead travellers and transporters ; load, grasping and depositing; lifting - cradles.- Apparatus for loading and unloading ships comprises a ropeway 3 running fore and aft of the vessel and a runway 2 extending to the shore. The runway 2 is trunnioned on a vertical pivot on an operator's platform 4 carried by a lattice-work mast 1, which is pivoted to the deck so that the mast and runway may rest on the deck when not in use. Travelling on the ropeway 3 is a carriage which is traversed by a hauling-rope, and the load is suspended in the bight of a lifting-rope, Fig. 5. Travelling on the runway 2 is a crane, of which the hoisting-rope 12 is passed to a drum 14. An endless operating- rope, extending the length of the runway to the winding gear 7, passes round the drum 14 so as normally to raise or lower the load. When the crane is secured to the operating-rope by a grip actuated from the platform 4, hoisting ceases and the crane is traversed. The yokes 24 of the carriers 23, Fig. 5, are provided with double hooks 25. In unloading a vessel, empty carriers returned upon the hook 9 of the crane are deposited by the free hook 25 upon a counterweighted hook 21. The loaded carrier is suspended from the ropeway 3 is then picked up by the hook 9 and transferred to the shore. The various cables are driven from the ship's engine.
