Abstract
23,797. Davison, G. C. Nov. 12, 1910, [Convention date]. S t e e r i n g a n d manoeuvring submarine v e s s e l s . - Horizontal rudders of wide spread, used for diving and r i s i n g in submarine boats, are arranged so that they may be turned about both an horizontal and a vertical axis, in order that they may lie against the side of the vessel when it is cruising at the surface, and separate actuating- means are employed to incline the rudders, when extended, about an horizontal axis. The rudders 13, Fig. 1, are carried on spindles 12, Fig. 4, w h i c h are mounted in bearings 20 provided with vertical pintles 10, Figs. 2 and 4, journaled in bearings 23, Fig. 4, carried on a superstructure on the boat. The rudders are inclined for steering by means of a shaft ], Fig. 2, connected through a universal joint to the worm 2, Figs. 2 and 4, which engages with the toothed sectors 7 connected to bevel sectors 9 loose on the pins 10. The sectors 9 engage with bevel sectors 11 secured to the rudder spindles. The rudders are extended and withdrawn by means of a worm-wheel 17, which actuates toothed sectors 19 in which the ends of the rudder shafts are journaled. As the worm 17 is turned the sectors 19 are rotated, thus turning the rudders about the pins 10, and at the same time the bevel sectors 11 engage with the bevel-gear 9, which is now locked by the worm-wheel 2, thus turning the rudder about an horizontal axis until the rudder 13, Fig. 7, takes up a position against the side of the vessel 4.
