Abstract

23,272. Evans, P. Oct. 26, 1910, [Convention date]. Clutches, friction. - Relates to mechanism between the engine and gear-box in which a multiple-disk clutch is combined with a universal joint mounted within the clutch casing, and with a braking-device external to the clutch for bringing the driven clutch member to rest when disconnected. The clutch casing 3 is secured to the fly-wheel 2 and carries a sleeve 22 forming an abutment for the spring 16, which normally forces the alternating inner and outer sets of plates 14, 15 into engagement. The inner driven member 13 of the clutch carries an internallytoothed drum 24 engaging a toothed member 25 secured to the end of the shaft 4, arranged between the clutch and gear-box, and constructed preferably in two parts connected by a sleeve coupling 5. The toothed members 24, 25 form a universal joint, and a similar joint 28, 29 is provided at the rear end of the intermediate shaft 4. The sleeve 18, which is spaced away from the shaft 4, supports a non-rotating operating-member 20, which also carries a fixed spherical brake member 21 coacting with a movable member 26 secured to the shaft 4. A curved bearing-washer 11 is provided between the intermediate shaft and the end of the engine shaft, and a similar arrangement is provided at the rear end of the intermediate shaft. Flexible liquid-tight devices 23 are provided between the shaft 4 and sleeve 18.
