Leathers or sweat bands having pads or shields comprising felt and a stiff backing have the felt continued below the backing and the pads fixed in the hat either by separate clips or by tongues &c. formed on the backing. The felt a, Fig. 1, and the backing b of metal, celluloid, &c., are sewn together at c, and attached to the hat by clips consisting of a plate f having barbed points g which project through the backing into the hat. The edges of the felt are prevented from fraying by stitching d along the upper edge, and along the lower edge by a strip of rubber &c. e stuck on, or by treating with rubber solution. The backing b, Fig. 4, may have projections b<1> through which the stitching d passes, but a strip of felt a<1> always projects below the backing. If the backing is of metal, tongues may be stamped out or projections formed on it to fix the pad in the hat; these projections k, Fig. 7, may be bent round the reed l so that the points engage the hat m. In another modification, a sheet-metal plate n, Fig. 8, is attached to the backing by tongues o and to the hat by prongs p bent upwards and a prong q inserted in a downward direction.
