Cam mechanism.-In means for transmitting power at an increased or a diminished speed ratio pins 2 movable in slots 5 in a driving- part 1, which moves from left to right, are constrained in their motion by a fixed guide 3 and engage and drive teeth 4 on the driven member. As a pin 2 moves forwards and upwards to a position 2<1>, the corresponding tooth 4, instead of moving to a position 4<11>, moves only to a position 4<1>, being allowed to slip back by the upward sliding of the pin. Such an arrangement may be adapted as a reducing- gear. In Fig. 8, a guide 3<1> slopes the other way, the effect being that the tooth 4 in moving to position 4', instead of to the position 4", has an additional motion imparted to it by the downward motion of the pin 2. A speedmultiplying gear is thus produced. In Fig. 16 is shown a simple adaptation of the principle for transmitting rotary motion. The pins 2, instead of moving in the slots 5, may be carried upon links pivoted to the rotary member 1.
