[Addition to 16,917/10.] Couplings, automatic, convertible to non- automatic.-In apparatus for raising an automatic coupler as described in the parent Specification, to permit coupling of the car with another that is not fitted with an automatic coupler, a device is provided to maintain the lifting and lowering chain in such relation with the gravity lock which fastens the coupler in its elevated position as to ensure the actuation of the lock under all conditions. The tail-piece of the lock 36 is formed with a slot 36<a> within which slides a tripping-bar 39 having a loop 39<b> through which the chain 29 passes. When the coupler is in the lowered position, the loop 39b is supported in a notch 36<f> on one side of the tail-piece. When the chain 29 is wound on the shaft 27 to lift the coupler, as described in the parent Specification, the support of the gravity lock 36 is lowered and the gravity lock drops, leaving behind it the tripping-bar 39, which is then supported by the chain. When the coupler is raised and the operating-handle 28 is released, the tripping-bar 39 drops into such a position that, when the chain is again tightened for lowering the coupler, the release of the gravity lock is ensured.
