Abstract

Actuating; indicating amount of opening.-A valve is operated from a distance by an electric motor through worm gearing and a claw coupling, the members of which are disengaged by the insertion of a handle when the valve is to be manually operated. Indicators at the control station and at the valve are also provided to indicate the opening and closing of the valve. A motor b, Fig. 1, mounted on the valve casing is geared to the valve spindle through a resilient clutch c, worm-gearing d, e, a claw coupling, and the spindle h. The claw coupling consists of a member mounted on a sliding sleeve f keyed to the spindle h and a member carried by the wheel e. The claw members are normally held in engagement by means of a spring i, which bears upon the hub of the wheel e, and a shoulder f<2> fixed to the sleeve f. To disengage the claw members when manual operation of the valve is desired, a hand-wheel j is provided with a sleeve by means of which the sleeve f is moved longitudinally, thus disengaging the members of the claw coupling before the wheel j engages the spindle h. The hand-wheel is held in position by means of a key. To indicate the opening and closing of the valve at the control station the spindle h is provided with an arm h<1>, which engages a star-wheel l<1> on a screwed spindle l. The spindle l carries a nut m, upon which is mounted an insulated contact, m<1> adapted to engage an insulated rod m<2> as the nut travels along the spindle l. The supports of the spindle l and rod m<2> are provided with contacts n, n<1> connected to lamps or other electro - magnetic indicating - devices so that, when the nut m reaches the ends of its travel, one of these devices is energized by current from the rod m<2>, thereby indicating at the central station whether the valve is closed or open. The nut m also carries an arm p which engages one of two arms q, q<1> of a weighted lever, the position of which indicates the opening or closing of the valve.
