Abstract

12,515. Fischer, P. G. May 23. Indicating and locating leaks.-An apparatus for indicating the escape of gas from pipes or conduits is introduced into a by - pass to the main pipe, and is provided with means to give first an audible or visible signal and then to close a valve to prevent escape of gas. The cock 3 in the pipe 2 controls the flow of gas through the main pipe 2 or through the by-pass 25, to the slide - valve casing of an ordinary bellows motion-device 4 and to the return pipe 26, which is controlled by the shut-off valve 18. When the indicating-apparatus is switched in, and there is a flow of gas due to a fault in the piping or to a cock being left open, the motiondevice 4 comes into operation, and, by means of the link-work 5, 6, 7, turns the worm 11, and rotates the disk 14. This cam disk has two notches to engage with a pin 21 to act on the lever 16 and make an electric contact with the terminal 17, and, after an interval, close the shut-off valve 18. The turning of the control cock 3 is effected by the rod 22, which is provided with a slotted arm 23 to which is connected the fork 24 for throwing the movable coupling-sleeve 15 into and out of engagement. In a modified apparatus, the rotation transmitted by worm-gearing from the gas-current motion-device to the driving-shaft 13 is transmitted to a spur wheel, with which engages a rack brought into engagement with the wheel by a hand - lever. The rack is employed for moving the circuit-closer and also for closing the shut-off valve.
