Abstract

619,223. Controlling change-speed gearing. HUMBER, Ltd., MILLER, A. C., CAMPER, A. M., and SAMPIETRO, A. C. March 25, 1946, No. 9130. [Class 80 (ii)] In a manually operable change-speed gearbox, an electric switch for controlling a magnetic clutch is combined with the gear change control, so that initial movement of the latter on changing gear operates the switch. In one embodiment the top of a gear lever 30 is machined at its end to a square section 31 which is recessed at 32 for the reception of a spring contact 33. A rectangular metal sleeve 34, having an insulating knob 36 secured thereto, is pivoted to the lever 30 by a screw 35. A contact ring 39 is let into the sleeve 34 and is insulated therefrom by a surrounding ring 40. The spring contact 33 normally bears against insulating material 41 in the centre of the ring 39, but when pressure is applied to the knob in a direction to change gear, the knob pivots about the screw 35 and the spring contact 33 is brought into contact with the ring 39. A wire 42 secured to the ring 39 continues the electric circuit to the clutch. In a modification, Fig. 1, the gear-change lever comprises a handle 3 pivoted within the mouth of a tube 2 in a rubber bushing 8. On initial movement of handle 3, the switch is closed by contact of the enlarged end 6 of the handle 3 with the tube 2. Specifications 594,906 and 610,519 are referred to.
