Abstract
13,644. Boult, A. J., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. June 7. Boot-sole sewing machines; stopping-gear, non-automatic.-The stopping-gear is arranged to bring the machine to rest with the needle withdrawn from the work and without a loop of thread in its barb. In one form of apparatus, a known form of stopping-gear which produces a reversal in the direction of running of the machine before bringing it finally to rest is timed to secure the reversal of the machine when the needle is in the work and to bring the machine to rest with the needle away from the work. By these means, the thread loop previously held by the needle-barb is transferred to the needle-shank in the usual way, and either the looper does not place a new loop in the needle-barb or, if it does so, upon the reversal of its movements the loop is removed. Fig. 2 shows in end view the stopping-gear. A lug 58, attached to one end of a spiral spring the other end of which is attached to the inside of the pulley 28, is stopped when the clutch is disengaged by a finger 46. Thereafter, first the kinetic energy in the machine is used to wind up the spring, and then the spring causes a reversal of the pulley 28 and the machine parts until a lug 61 engages the other side of the finger 46. When the clutch is disengaged, the movement of the pulley 28 is restrained by a strap-brake 62, one end of which is connected to a lever 70. This lever is rotated by the engagement of a bowl 72 upon it with a camsurface 73 on a lever 51, which controls the finger 46. The clutch rod 36 and the rod 57 are connected to the stop-treadle. The finger 46 can be withdrawn to free the machine for manual operation by the handle 58 of the lever 51, which, for that purpose, is jointed to the rod 57 by a pin-and-slot connexion.
