Abstract

954,734. Controlling clutches. G. M. PFAFF A.G. Aug. 9, 1962 [Aug. 11, 1961], No. 30495/62. Heading F2L. [Also in Division D1] In a sewing machine, a shaft 34 rotates through one revolution on actuation of a handle, in order to shift the needle and bobbin threads into engagement with a fixed thread-cutting blade. Shaft 34 carries a disc 39 formed with a cylindrical flange 70. A gear 35, journalled on shaft 34 and driven by gears 36, 38 from a shaft 13, carries a pin 43 which rotates within flange 70. An arm 66, pivoted at 67, is biased by a spring 69 towards flange 70, whereby a lug 68 on arm 66 enters a recess 45 in flange 70 to displace therefrom one end 44 of an arcuate arm 41 pivoted at 40 to disc 39, lug 68 being biased by a spring 46 against an edge 47 of recess 45. The other and hooked end of arm 41 is thereby positioned outside the path of movement of pin 43. A handle is connected by a link 56 to a rod 58 on an arm 59 rigid with a pivoted shaft 61. A spring 60 acts on shaft 61 to bias a pin 62 on arm 59 away from a cam 63 on shaft 13, and also to bias a pin 65 on an arm 64 rigid with shaft 61 away from arm 66. Upon actuation of said handle, pin 62 is moved into engagement with the lowest point of cam 63 at the moment appropriate to ensure correct operation of the threadsevering means, and pin 65 engages arm 66 to withdraw lug 68 from recess 45. End 44 is thereby biased by spring 46 into engagement with edge 47, whereby end 42 is engaged by pin 43 to couple shaft 34 to shaft 13. Near the end of a rotation of shaft 34, lug 68 rides down a bevel 71 in flange 70 to enter recess 45 and displace end 44 therefrom.
