Cyanamides and cyanides are produced from carbide by adding halogen salts to molten carbide as it flows from the furnace, or by adding these salts directly to the furnace wherein the carbide is produced, and allowing nitrogen to react upon the resulting mixture. Suitable salts are calcium chloride and fluoride.
