Abstract

8394. Short, H. L., Short, A. E., and Short, H. O. April 4. Motor power plant.-The propellers of an aerial-machine are carried by independent sleeves mounted on a fixed spindle, and are driven by independent power plants. A single pair of propellers may be used, and the sleeves may be connected to rotary engines so that the engines and propellers are co-axial. Or two pairs of propellers may be arranged at each side of the fuselage as shown in Fig. 2, the rear propellers being driven by the motor 8, and the front propellers by the motor 7. The propellers may be in front of or behind the planes, or both in front of and behind them. The spindles 1 are carried by the trussed frames 12. The blades of one propeller may be shorter than those of the other, Fig. 5. The pitch of the ends of the blades of the two propellers is the same, while that part of the larger propeller 4 within the diameter of the path traversed by the ends of the smaller propeller is formed of approximately the pitch necessary to travel through the air without slip.
