Abstract

4521. Peto & Radford, and Genese, H. M. Feb. 22. Switches.-The contacts of switches for controlling a number of separate circuits are arranged in concentric circles on a fixed baseplate, and a rotatable insulated disk is provided with conducting-strips adapted to bridge some or all of the fixed contacts. The switch is stated to be applicable for use in motor-car ignition and lighting, for lamps on ships, in mines, and for stage effects. A switch designed for use on motor-vehicles in connexion with the accumulators provided for ignition, lighting, or other purposes, comprises four pairs of spring plunger contacts arranged in two concentric circles on a base 1, Fig. 2, a rotatable insulating-plate 2 carrying two pairs of segmental contacts 3, 4, 5, 6, a cover 7, and a spring bolt 9 entering into notches at the various contact positions of the plate 2. An indicating-arm is provided outside the cover. In the position shown in Fig. 5, no circuits are completed. A quarter-turn to the position shown in Fig. 5<A> puts an accumulator c into circuit with the induction coil d through the contacts c<1>, c<1>, d<1>, d<2>, the return from d<2> being by way of the mass of the machine. One-eighth of a turn to the right from the last position connects the accumulator c to a higher voltage charging- accumulator a through contacts a<1>, c<1> and connects the alternative accumulator b to the induction coil d through contacts b<1>, d<1>, d<2>. One-eighth of a turn to the left puts the accumulator b to be charged and the accumulator c on the induction coil. In a modified form of the switch for use when a dynamo is employed to charge accumulators, and also to light lamps, additional contacts e ... k, Fig. 8, are arranged on the base-plate, the contact e is connected to the dynamo, the contact f to the accumulator, and the other contacts to lamps. A separatelyrotatable contact ring connects more or fewer of the lamps to the dynamo, and a connexion between a' and f is made for charging. Cases.-The switch may be constructed with an air-tight case having liquid seals for the moving part, and rubber or like washers for the joints.
